A memorable night on the third Giant Howarth Sleepout

Published: 18th October 2024

Giants Community Trust and Howarths Foundation third instalment of the Giant Howarth Sleepout took place on Friday 11th October at the John Smith’s Stadium.

It was another memorable event for our participants who came together to help raise vital funds to support the vulnerable and homeless in our community.

Spending a night on the terraces of the Kilner Bank inside the John Smith’s Stadium is a unique opportunity, but it is a night of solidarity and empathy as you gain insights and experiences of the hardships homeless individuals face on a day to day basis.

The fundraiser is a firm fixture in the calendar and is a vital event which helps raise valuable funds to support the work of both charities.

On the night, as the temperatures started to fall we listened to Carl Headley, from the Howarths Foundation as he spoke candidly about the hardships of homelessness but also the success the foundation has had this year – placing 13 of their clients back into employment. The crowd also heard from a current client of the foundation as he delivered his story and thanked everyone in attendance for ‘caring and helping to make a difference‘.

Both Lisa Darwin, CEO of GiantsCT and Andy Howarth, CEO of Howarths Foundation spoke of their pride to the supporters that came together and gave insights of where the split funds will be distributed back into the community.

Lights were called at midnight as everyone headed to their make-shift sleeping arrangements for the night. At approximately 2:00am it was recorded around 2 degrees with rain following at around 4:00am until the event concluded around 06:00am. The coldest event to date.

Nina Edwards who attended for her first year commented: “I would like to say the organisation of this event was brilliant!!  It was my first sleepout and I had no idea what to expect and it felt so well thought out, planned and executed. Well done everyone – and after such an emotional event it won’t be my last sleepout! (I may also invest in thermal socks!)”

Funds generated to the Giants will be put back into delivering sports and social projects to support vulnerable families and individuals through the winter months. Work packages will be created through the Howarths Foundation as they continue to support their clients who are hidden homeless back into employment.
