Huddersfield Giants Women will launch their 2019 Championship campaign by travelling to Widnes Vikings on Sunday 7th April. Before taking on Leeds outfit Oulton Raidettes in their first competitive home fixture of the year at Orchard FM Community Sports Park on Sunday 14th April.
2019 is set to be an exciting Championship season with the likes of Warrington Wolves joining the competitions alongside established outfits Hull FC, Stanningley and Oulton Raidettes.
The 14 round, eight-team competition cannot get underway quick enough for head coach Steve Stead and his players who have endured a gruelling pre-season campaign in readiness for what they hope to be a successful season concluding with a grand final appearance on Sunday 13th October at The Emerald Headingley Stadium. The team will also be looking towards the opportunity of testing themselves against Super League opposition in the Challenge Cup.
Club captain Jamie Leigh-Scott is looking ahead to the start of the season with excitement. “Pre-season has been a challenge but all the girls have put in 100%. We have played our first game together so that has hopefully allowed us to understand how individuals play. We’re all looking forward to the season ahead and excited to see the hard work pay off”
Asked about the possibility of a grand final appearance, Assistant Coach James Westerby commented. “There are some real unknown quantities for us in terms of opposition and we are going to have to approach each game as it comes and learn from them. We are confident with the playing group we have. Through pre-season they have prepared really well and are raring to get on the bus to Widnes to gauge where we are at.”
