Building a pathway through Rugby League into Further Education

Published: 31st January 2020

Huddersfield Giants Community Trust has a pathway structure in place through Rugby League and sport.

HGCT goal is to actively inspire people through sport. As part of our delivery, we offer a pathway through Rugby League with opportunities to go into Further Education for post 16, with goals of working into a professional environment.

Our development days through Huddersfield Giants are an opportunity to progress, learn and develop core skills. With a clear pathway in place from our u’12s we have had some success stories!

Travis Corion is currently a Huddersfield Giants reserves team player, progressing through the Evolution pathway scheme.

“My name is Travis Corion, I am a winger and currently play for Huddersfield Giants Reserves and dual registered to Halifax RFL. I am currently studying at Huddersfield Giants Community Trust Education Programme completing the BTEC Sport level 3 qualification.

I’ve been playing rugby since I was 4 for StJoes and Newsome Panthers, and started attending Evolution Training Programme (ETP) sessions from the age of 13. I really enjoyed them, as it was an interesting insight into the scholarship training sessions and coaches. It was a great opportunity to impress the coaches and get my name out there. When I was 15 the Head of Youth, Andy Kelly, attended one of the ETP sessions and saw me train. I remember after stepping a player, he approached me and asked whether I could step on my other foot, which I happily demonstrated. Later that week I received a phone call to invite me to join the Scholarship Programme, which led to me joining the Academy programme.

I found the Academy programme really welcoming. I felt like part of a team, with a group of mates all with the same ambitions and goals. It was physically more demanding, training on average 5 days a week with 16 – 19 year olds, and regularly playing against high calibre players.

My greatest sporting moment so far was a match winning try in my first year of the Academy. It was an away game against London Broncos Academy. It was a play from a scum that came wide and I scored with a diving finish. More recently I was part of the Halifax RFL team that beat Hull FC in a preseason friendly. It was a great experience playing first grade rugby and I managed to get on the scoresheet. I’m looking forward to what the future may hold and with my long term goal to make my Huddersfield Giants debut.”

Our Evolution pathway development days start in February with the opportunity to join. Click here to find out more
