7:30pm kick-off at Oulton Raiders on Wednesday 4th July as the Giants Women U19s side take on Leeds Rhinos.
Fresh from an 18-10 victory against Wigan Warriors on the 22nd June, Stead is ready for what sets out to be the team’s biggest and toughest contest yet:
“For me, this week is going to be our hardest yet. Leeds have a strong set up, and we are under no illusions that this is the game that is going to show where we are in terms of our progression. We are impressed with what we have seen so far from the girls and we are confident in the ability of the girls we have got. We have some incredibly strong players and expect it to be a very good game.
Leeds have only played one game so far against Castleford, but are also coming to play off of the back off of a win. We’ve had to make a few changes to our team due to the availability of players, but the team have been excellent at showing their adaptability, whether that be to the team or to the game plan which we intend to do again this week.
For example in The Navy’s game, they made us play a very dominant forwards game, and we then had to change our style again against Wigan. We are hopeful that we have more strength across the board this week and are confident that we have players that are looking to push to play in open age next year.”
With the season 3 games in, Stead spoke about how their strict training regime is paying off in their games so far:
“Now they are on the pitch the girls can see the reward for their training, their commitment is definitely paying off. Olivia Wood has been outstanding as a forward, and has received Player of the Match for the past 2 games. She takes every single drive and puts her body on the line every game and her attitude towards the game is infectious for the girls. The change from training to match days has been evident. We have seen the team gel a lot more and there is a very good morale amongst the girls.”
