Huddersfield Giants Women travelled to The ASICS Stadium yesterday for their first pre-season friendly where they walked away with a 20-14 victory over the newly formed Warrington Wolves Womens team.
The team got off to a slow start seeing them go 6-0 down early in the game but the team rallied together and brought the scores back level with quick thinking from Grace Waites crossing over from dummy half, Abby Price adding the extras.
A team further piled on the pressure with a Jamie Leigh-Scott try soon after taking the score to 12-6, Abby Price once again successful with the boot before Hafsa Ur-Rehman made it 16-6 eight minutes later. This time Price unable to add the extras.
Before half time Warrington were able to hit back with a try on the stroke of half time, the conversion unsuccessful. The Giants taking a 16-10 lead into the half time break.
Warrington came out the stronger side following the break, opening the scoring in the second period narrowing the Giants lead to just two points, 16-14.
The Giants knew they needed to score next and the team didn’t have to wait long when Olivia Cummins obliged with an unconverted try which saw the Giants take the victory at the whistle, final score of 20-14.
Head Coach, Steve Stead gave his overview of the game. “The girls went really well. We’ve been training now since the beginning of January so it was good to get them on the pitch. We have a young side and with huge potential and the youngsters stood up to that challenge against the Wolves, especially Caitlin Johnson who I thought had a great game.”
“We made hard work of it at times and turned over the ball too many times but that was the first game with us for a good number of the squad. I was really impressed with the experience Jordanna Proctor brought to the team which is going to be a huge benefit this season”.
Huddersfield Giants Women begin their Championship league campaign on Sunday April 7th.
