Huddersfield Giants Community are proud to announce Scissett CE Academy as their inaugural Partner School for their new School Partnership Programme after they sign up for a Double Gold Partnership Package.
A successful launch night of the School Partnership Programme was held at the Huddersfield Giants home game against Hull KR and was delivered by Head of Sport, Jonathan Timms and Sports Partnership Manager Rachael Lakey. The new initiative engages local schools in the community to achieve their sporting and physical education goals.
With over a third of children leaving primary school overweight or obese according to Public Health England, the programme couldn’t have come at a more poignant time. Huddersfield Giants Community delivers PE lessons, healthy eating programs and literacy/numeracy intervention as part of the initiative upon extra-curricular activities such as after school to support schools in achieving aims set by the national curriculum. Programmes are completely bespoke on a school by school basis, which in turn enables children of all abilities to participate. This then provides every pupil involved a structured, but enjoyable learning experience.
Although the programme is primarily aimed at pupils, Huddersfield Giants Community are keen to build a positive two-way relationship with staff and teachers too. Becoming a Partner School enables staff to take advantage of CPD opportunities, be invited to events, receive tickets to Huddersfield Giants match days and to obtain free Play Vouchers for use at The Zone.
Previously a Lecturer of Sports Coaching and Performance at Dearne Valley College and now Head of Sport at Huddersfield Community Trust, Jonathan Timms understands the benefits of a programme such as this, “The program allows us to utilise our branding and PE expertise to positively impact young people within our communities. Our vision is that no young person leaves high school obese and that everyone in our community confidently engages in sport and physical activity, thus leading healthy, active lives. We have worked in partnership with Scissett CE Academy for many years now and I am delighted that the school saw such benefit from our work that they not only signed up for our Gold Partnership Package but actually doubled the package! This will see a member of Huddersfield Giants Community staff working extensively within the school throughout the whole of the 2018/19 academic year which will enable us as an organisation to motivate and inspire the schools’ pupils to lead active healthy lives”.
Head of School at Scissett CE Academy Cathy Hampshire commented, “We have found the sports coaches to always be enthusiastic, professional and keen to be involved in our school life. They have quickly developed a good rapport with our pupils and staff, delivering high-quality PE skills.
We feel that the partnership offers excellent value for money, with skilled staff working in partnership with us to develop pupil confidence and skills across a range of sports. The programme enables us to use sports coaches as positive role models for young people, within sport and literacy.
We are keen to engage a greater amount of pupils into a variety of regular sporting activities both across the school and at lunchtimes. With the range of rewards available through the programme, we feel pupils will also be greater engaged and gain a lifelong enthusiasm for sporting activities.”
